Angelo Dundee, the former boxing trainer to Muhammad Ali as well as local WBU title-holder Jimmy Lange, has passed away at the age of 90.
He was being treated for a blood clot in Florida after a flight back from celebrating Muhammad Ali’s 70th birthday in Louisville.
Dundee was said to be the great motivator behind Ali’s biggest victories in the boxing ring, helping him attain the eternal title of ‘The Greatest’. He mentally pushed Ali through fights against names like Sonny Liston and Joe Frazier.
Among other fighters Dundee trained over the course of his illustrious career is another Washington, D.C. great, Sugar Ray Leonard. Upon watching Leonard fall behind in his memorable fight against Tommy Hearns, Dundee famously yelled, ”You’re blowing it, son. You’re blowing it.” Sugar Ray went on to win that fight by knockout.
Dundee spent over 60 years training young fighters in the sport of boxing. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
