RICHMOND, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — An attorney who lost a bid to become Henrico County’s top prosecutor has died from what police say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Henrico County police tell media outlets that family members found 42-year-old Matthew P. Geary dead on Sunday at a home on Lauderdale Drive. The body was found at the 2200 block of Lauderdale Drive in Short Pump, just outside of Richmond around 1 p.m. with a gunshot wound to the head. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, police are investigating his death as an apparent suicide.
Geary, a Republican, ran for the office of Henrico County commonwealth’s attorney in 2011. He finished third in the November election behind Democratic winner Shannon Taylor and former Henrico Del. Bill Janis. Janis, a Republican, gave up his seat in the General Assembly and ran as an independent.
The attorney who defeated Geary, Shannon Taylor, issued a statement:
“I want to offer my heartfelt sympathy to Matt’s wife Tabitha and his children and family. I’ve known Matt since our days in law school and he was a colleague and a friend whom I held in both high personal and professional regard. Matt was an effective prosecutor who served the public with commitment and dedication. The respect in which he was held by law enforcement is something that any prosecutor would wish to achieve. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Matt’s family and I pray they find comfort in his memory.”
