ROCKVILLE, MD (CBSDC) — Like so many times before, plans to build a Wal-Mart store are causing quite the stir. This time it’s Rockville where the pros and cons of having the retail giant in the neighborhood are being weighed.

The company plans to build a store at Pike Center on the already congested Rockville Pike. With construction ongoing in other locations and traffic already at capacity, it’s unclear what could be done to accommodate another influx of cars.

Building the mega store would also come at the expense of some shops currently at the location.

Still, it’s difficult for Montgomery County officials to shy away from the type of revenue Wal-Mart would bring to the area. In addition, it would also create a host of jobs.

“We’re very happy because the only Wal-Mart we have is far away from here,” said one person who lives near the proposed location. “We don’t go there because of the distance.”

The Rockville Patch reports construction of the store is expected to be complete by late 2013.

A public opinion survey of Montgomery County residents conducted in fall 2011 found that a solid majority (54%) supports a Walmart coming to Rockville Pike, and this increased to two-thirds (65%) when respondents learned about additional details such as the number jobs it would bring, and the store’s features including its sustainable design elements and focus on a wide selection of healthy, affordable groceries and fresh produce.
