WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Believe it or not, the Washington area is awfully generous when it comes to charitable donations on the web.

Three cities in the region ranked among the top ten Most Generous Online U.S. Cities of 2011 according to Convio, a consulting firm that helps non-profit groups with fundraising efforts.

The good folks in Alexandria, who held the top spot for the past three years, finished second on the list this go around, averaging $26,430.14 in donations for every 1,000 people in the city.

The District place third with $19,999.30 in donations per 1,000 residents.

Arlington came in a close fourth place with $19,983.73 in charitable contributions being given per 1,000 residents.

Seattle was most generous city of all, averaging $28,154.60 per 1,000 people.

The report ranked online charitable contributions in the 273 cities with populations greater than 100,000.

Convio says the size of the average donation of $65 was unchanged from the previous year although total contributions in the most generous cities increased by 11 percent.

Other nearby cities placed outside of the top ten, but still demonstrated a desire to help their favorite causes.

Richmond placed 28th and Baltimore ranked 78th most generous.

Nearly $1.355 billion in total online donations were generated through the Convio’s platforms that are used by nonprofit organizations across the country.
