WASHINGTON, DC (CBSDC) — An 11-year-old girl was mugged and robbed of her phone as she waited at a bus stop in front of Alice Deal Junior High in Northwest DC after school on Tuesday.
Police say the victim was distracted by texting and chatting with two nearby friends at the time she was robbed.
The culprit snatched the phone out of the girl’s hand and fled the scene on foot. At first the girls didn’t know what to make of incident.
“It seemed like the kind of student that would grab it, run a little bit and give it back… like a joke,” the victim’s friend told WNEW’s Kimberly Suitors. “When he didn’t stop running it was a little bit scary.”
The girl was just given the phone as a birthday present last month.
The mugging is the latest in an uptick of robberies in the area.
Police caution it is best to leave your cell phone in your pocket and stay alert to prevent such crimes from occurring.
