Ovi, Hunter Won’t Comment On Possible Suspension
The Caps held their final practice before the all-star game today as they prepare for the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins at Verizon Center tomorrow. The big news is that Alex Ovechkin has a disciplinary hearing this afternoon for his hit on Zbynek Michalek in the Caps 4-3 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday and there is a good chance he won’t play in the Capitals final game before the long all-star break.
Ovechkin is a repeat offender, he was suspended twice during the 2009-2010 season, both for two games a piece.
“I don’t know, we’ll see,” Ovechkin said today on a possible suspension. Capitals Head Coach Dale Hunter wouldn’t comment on it.
Forward Matt Hendricks got hit a few minutes later by Zbynek Michalek and Michalek also has a disciplinary hearing today.
“I don’t think it was a clean hit,” Hendricks said on the hit that Michalek laid on him.
Hendricks said he is fine from the hit.
The Caps ran their forward lines in preparation for a possible Ovechkin suspension. Today’s forward lines were: Ovechkin-Johansson-Perreault-Semin, Hendricks-Laich-Brouwer, Chimera-Halpern-Knuble, Beagle-Eakin-Ward.
All eight healthy Caps defenseman skated today. Marcus Johansson returned to the ice today following missing yesterday’s game with an illness and is alright.
Nicklas Backstrom skated for the first time since January 6th today, only wore sweats and was on the ice for about five minutes. Capitals Head Coach Dale Hunter said Backstrom would stay in the DC area during the all-star break hiatus.
