The Caps held a very optional practice today as they prepare to host the New York Islanders tomorrow.  The Caps have won their last three games, all at home, but the combined record of their last three opponents is 5-13-2 in January.  The Caps though have taken full advantage of an advantageous schedule by going 9-1 in their last ten home games and 7-2-0 in their last nine games.

The Caps are in first place in the Southeast Division for the first time since November and are 8-2-0 in their division this season which is key because only one team from the division might make the playoffs.

Nicklas Backstrom is still day-to-day and hasn’t played since January 3rd when he was hit in the head by Rene Bourque’s elbow.

“One of those things, day-to-day,”  Head Coach Dale Hunter said about Backstrom.  “We have to wait and see.”

Still no update on Mike Green, but since he is on LTIR, he can’t return until February 1st.

The Caps who practiced today were Perreault, Erskine, Schultz, Eakin, Neuvirth, Orlov, Kundratek & Beagle.

Listen here to what Dale Hunter, Jeff Halpern, Mike Knuble and Michal Neuvirth had to say following practice today.
