The Washington Capitals captured three crucial points with a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday night, and Caps goaltender Tomas Vokoun became the first to shutout the Pens this season. Today, 106.7 The Fan Caps insider Al Koken joined “The Mike Wise Show with Holden Kushner,” and talked about Vokoun’s outstanding night and whether or not Alex Ovechkin deserves an All-Star selection.
“There was no way Thomas Vokoun was considered an average goaltender before the start of the season, and for whatever reason, things combined to make him look average, and in spots below average. Now, he has got a little bit of a rhythm. He is used to a heavy workload at Florida, and they’re giving him that heavy workload (in Washington), and last night was a perfect example of how it is paying off for the Capitals.”
As for the star of the Caps, Alexander Ovechkin has had a disappointing season by his standards, but Koken believes he deserved his spot on the All-Star team.
“What I’ve seen from Alex Ovechkin over the past couple weeks, I think he is back to playing terrific hockey. Statistically probably not, but I don’t know. Should he (have been) named a starter? No. But he should be on the team, no questions asked.”
