FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (CBS Washington) – An 80-pound baby Jesus statue has gone missing from his manger just three days before Christmas.
Fredericksburg police are on the lookout for the suspects who stole an 80-pound baby Jesus statue from a nativity scene Tuesday night. WTVR reports that the 12-by-18 inch plastic baby Jesus figure was weighted down with 80 pounds of concrete to deter thefts.
“Why would you steal the baby Jesus from the nativity scene?” Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe told WTVR. “This isn’t the case of somebody stealing something because they need money or need to fulfill a particular need? This is a hard case to explain.”
This isn’t the first time the baby Jesus figure has been stolen. In 2005, the figure was returned within a few hours of being stolen.
Bledsoe told WTVR that the suspect or suspects who stole the baby Jesus figure potentially face a felony grand larceny charge.
Messages left by CBS Washington to Fredericksburg police were not immediately returned.
