The Great Eight Comes Through Late
Alex Ovechkin nails the game winner with 1:14 remaining in the third when he beat Ondrej Pavelec five hole and gives the Caps a 1-0 win in Winnipeg. For Ovechkin it’s his tenth of the season, but the team’s best player this season started the lone goal of the game.
Nicklas Backstrom stole the puck in the neutral zone, gave it to Marcus Johansson who took it over the blue line and dropped it for Ovechkin who used Johansson as a screen. The Caps have now won four of their last six and 16-13-1, 33 points on the season.
Michal Neuvirth was in goal and stopped 26 on the way to his fifth career shutout and his first of the season. It is the Caps second time this season they’ve shut out the opponent and first time since October 18th at home against the Panthers. Neuvirth is now 4-5-1 on the season. Both goalies were fantastic on the night and made some great saves.
The Caps had 28 shots on goal, Jason Chimera & Karl Alzner led the Caps with four shots a piece. Alex Ovechkin had 3 shots on goal and took seven shots overall in 16:41 of ice time. Alexander Semin had two shots on goal, six shots overall in 14:05 of ice time.
The Caps ended up 0-2 on the power play, but were 4-4 on the penalty kill. The Caps blocked 14 shots led by Karl Alzner with three. The Caps also had 13 hits and Jason Chimera led the team with four. John Carlson led all the Caps with 23:18 of ice time.
The Caps will practice in Winnipeg tomorrow then fly to Colorado to play Semyon Varlamov and the Avalanche on Saturday for a 9pm face off.
