Jay Williams was one of many former Duke Blue Devil basketball players inside Madison Square Garden last night when his former head coach Mike Kryzyzewski, aka Coach K, earned win 903 over Michigan State 74-69, setting a new Division I record. Coach K passed his mentor and former head coach Bobby Knight for the record, and Jay Williams joined “The Mike Wise Show with Holden Kushner” to discuss the milestone moment.
“When I was in the stands, it was so good to see all the faces of all the people who have contributed over the years to help Coach K get to this point,” Williams said. “I was with Grant Hill, Elton Brand, Trajan Langdon, Mike Dunleavy Jr., Shane Battier, Chris Duhon, Carlos Boozer; it was like a big-time reunion, and it was so good to see everybody and good to be a fan.”
Williams was also asked about one of his most memorable performances as a Blue Devil, when in 2001 Duke shocked the eighth-ranked Maryland Terrapins 98-96 in College Park with a 10-0 run to end regulation, with Williams scoring eight points during the run.
“I remember that game like yesterday. After that game, Juan Dixon and I are really good friends, and there was no better feeling for me, as a player and someone who participates in the ACC, to have Juan Dixon and those guys win it the year after. Juan is such a good guy and (former Maryland head coach) Gary Williams is a hell of a coach.”
Jay also shares how Coach K motivated him after his horrific motorcycle crash that ended his basketball career, and nearly his life.
