The Capitals won their second in a row and ninth of the season as three Caps, Jeff Halpern, John Carlson & Cody Eakin got their first goals of the season in the rout. For Eakin it’s his first career goal.
Michal Neuvirth started between the pipes for the Caps and stopped 24 of 25 shots. The Hurricanes though got on the board first when a Anthony Stewart slap shot beat Neuvirth early in the first, then he settled down from there. Jeff Halpern scored early in the second on a sort of pass from Mike Knuble that opened up an open net and then then later in the period Troy Brouwer had a one timer off a bouncing puck from Marcus Johansson to beat Cam Ward. For Brouwer it’s his third of the season and was an extremely difficult shot.
John Carlson got the scoring going in the third on a long power play slap shot to beat Ward and then later in the period Cody Eakin, in only his second career game, beat Ward late in the third on a wrister and Nicklas Backstrom ended the scoring with a wrister.
The Caps ended up 1 for 3 on the power play while the Hurricanes were 0 for 4. The Caps got a break on one of the penalty kills due to an early whistle on a loose puck that Jeff Skinner put in, but since the whistle had already blown it was no goal. The Caps ended up with 32 shots on goal.
The Capitals, 9-2-0, 18 points, head to Long Island to play the Islanders tomorrow and most likely Tomas Vokoun will be in net for the Caps. Defenseman Mike Green is not expected to play on the two game road trip, but is traveling with the team.
