Brooks Laich joined “The Sports Junkies” on 106.7 The Fan before the Capitals traveled for their two game road trip, putting their 7-0-0 record to the test in Canada, playing Edmonton and Vancouver.
One of the main reasons for the Caps early success has been new goalie addition Tomas Vokoun, who’s allowed only six goals in the past five games. The hard part is balancing a hot goaltender and not wearing him down from overuse.
“I know Vokey likes a good workload. He’s played a lot of games. Sixty-plus games every year for the past four years in Florida. He likes a heavy work-load. If you’re used to that it’s kind of different if you’re used to playing a lot of minutes and switch to playing half your minutes it throws you off a little bit,” Laich said.
Laich predicted Vokoun would see his first rest on the road trip and hinted the team is looking to keep him fresh for later in the season, but is confident Michael Neuvirth can get the job done.
“We’re here to win the Stanley Cup, not win the race in October. So, you have to give [Vokoun] a little rest and Michael’s going to play and Michael’s a terrific goaltender, too.”
