Week five saw a number high-profile blowouts and a few upsets. TCU, Baylor, Virginia Tech, South Carolina and USF all were upset this week. LSU enjoyed an easy game against Kentucky in their first game at #1 this season. Meanwhile the marquee matchups all turned in to blowouts as Alabama crushed Florida 38-10 and Wisconsin rudely welcomed Nebraska to Big 10 play with a 48-17 win.
Game of the Week:
#18 Arkansas 42, #14 Texas A&M 38
The old Southwestern Conference – and future SEC West – foes met in JerryWorld at Cowboys Stadium. The Aggies blew another 17+ point half time lead as the Razorbacks came back from a 35-17 deficit. Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson did his best Ryan Mallett imitation, as the gunslinger went 30 of 51 for 510 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Offensive Player of the Week:
Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson – Wilson performance in the comeback victory over the Aggies was quite impressive. While two of his three leading receivers were shut down, Wilson spread the ball around to everyone and accomplished the 18 point comeback.
Honorable Mentions: WR Jarius Wright, Arkansas; QB Case Keenum, Houston; QB Matt Barkley, USC; RB Christine Michael, Texas A&M; RB Ray Graham, Pittsburgh
Defensive Player of the Week:
CB Tyrann Mathieu, LSU – It’s only 5 weeks into the season, but it’s abundantly clear, Mathieu is the best player in the country on defense. Mathieu finished the game against Kentucky with 5 tackles (1 for loss), 2 forced fumbles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery and 1 defensive touchdown. In honor of his superhuman week, there are no honorable mentions.
If I Had a Heisman Vote:
1) QB Robert Griffin III, Baylor
2) QB Kellen Moore, Boise State
3) QB Russell Wilson, Wisconsin
4) CB Tyrann Mathieu, LSU
5) QB Case Keenum, Houston
Week 6 Preview:
Oregon got the week off right with a big win over Cal on Thursday night. Boise State will look to duplicate that success against Fresno State tonight. This weekend is limited on big games as LSU-Florida and the Red River Shootout (Sorry, it’s always been called the shootout, rivalry just doesn’t sound right) dominate the day.
