Cooley Loving The Game For First Time
Redskins tight end Chris Cooley was gracious enough to join “The Sports Junkies” on 106.7 The Fan in studio and hang out while on his bye week.
Skins are 3-1 heading into their bye and the atmosphere in the locker room has done a 180 from the past. So much so that Cooley has a rejuvenated outlook on football.
“This has been such an amazing experience for me. It’s the first time in my career, I’ve started to love the game and I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older or because of really the staff is. In my first few years, I really didn’t like getting up and going to work. I liked playing the games but the days were misery,” Cooley said.
What made Cooley turn the corner is the current coaching staff.
“This is the most organized and efficient, intelligent staff that I’ve been around. Everything makes sense. Everything works. They’re player oriented.”
Earlier this week, Cooley made comments reveling in Cowboys’ QB Tony Romo interceptions that led to the Lions comeback win in Dallas and pundits like Skip Bayless from ESPN said the tight comes across as a “lame brained, knee-jerked Redskins fan.”
Fans think Cooley would be perfect for the media with his sense of humor and candid interviews, but with the recent backlash revolving around his Romo comments it has put a sour taste in his mouth.
“You sit in a production meeting and guys like this say ‘You pick this side, I take this side, let’s go as far as we can go with it and that makes good TV.’ I clearly understand that. So that’s another reason I truly don’t want to be in that type of media.” He said. “Sitting here with [The Sports Junkies]…This would be awesome,” Cooley added.
Cooley had a lot to say regarding the team’s progression this year, his reaction to his Romo comments being over-blown, advice on how to respond to Skip Bayless’ reaction and answers listeners questions.
