In what seemed to be a match where DC United could have easily earned three points, Chivas USA decided to spoil the fun by coming back from a 2 goal deficit to earn a tie with United 2-2 in front of wet crowd at RFK. This puts a dent in to United’s hopes to stage a playoff push in the last few weeks of the season.
United started the scoring in the 37th minute with a header inside the box by Dewayne De Rosario off of a free kick taken by Andy Najar. De Rosario seemed to be in an offside position but the officiating crew did not catch it. Coming out of the halftime break United quickly got on the board again with a goal by Ethan White off a rebound from a De Rosario shot that fell right to his awaiting left foot to get it past the Chivas goalkeeper.
In the 57th minute Juan Pablo Angel scored his first of two goals on a beautiful header. His second and tying goal came in 69th minute after a failed clearance by the DC defense led to a wide open shot from Angel which he put away easily. United had a golden opportunity to regain the lead and possibly win the game when De Rosario was brought down in the box and a penalty kick was awarded. Unfortunately for DC United De Rosario shot low and to the left of the goalkeeper where he easily was able to make the save.
For United this is a tough game to swallow considering they were on top 2-0 and they are in desperate need of points to make that final playoff push. DC gets another chance at home this Saturday when they host Real Salt Lake.
