Tom Penders: Schools Will Break Away From NCAA, Form “Super 64”
More From The Sports Junkies
Former NCAA basketball coach Tom Penders joined “The Sports Junkies” to help explain the conference realignment’s impact on sports and universities across the country.
Although the colleges bolting to other conferences is football driven, it has a drastic impact on basketball. Penders thinks that the ACC will be the premier hoops conference with the additions of Pittsburgh and Syracuse and possibly UConn. He also thinks by aligning themselves with powerhouse basketball programs, the ACC did a good job of combining established programs in hoops along with up and coming schools in football for the future.
However, in the end, Penders believed the most radical scenario is likely.
“It’s going to be a super 64. They’re going to break away from the NCAA. They’re going to make their own television deal. because they don’t want to split it with the MEAC the SWAC the MAC the other MAC in the Northeast et cetera et cetera. It’s all about the money.”
Penders also adds that’s it’s shameful that the alignment is ignoring the tradition and history of schools along with conference loyalty.
