Tennis Channel analyst and friend of “The Sports Junkies” Justin Gimelstob calls from New York as the 2011 U.S. Open begins today to talk about all the storylines to keep an eye on as the matches unfold.
According to Gimelstob, the men’s side is very top-heavy and only a handful of names he sees as emerging as this year’s winner.
Rafael Nadal is the defending champion but Novak Djokovic is the heavy favorite if his shoulder has healed from an injury. Still, Roger Federer has the star power and skill to win, but has been playing inconsistent so far this season. Andy Murray and Mardy Fish close out Gimelstob’s favorites in New York.
As far as Federer’s inconsistency this season, Gimelstob says, “Federer has gotten a little bit more inconsistent, a little bit slower to the ball and you got guys like Djokovic, Murray and Nadal coming into their prime. It’s just evolution. It’s understandable those margins have been cut and Federer is going to win a lot, he’s just a victim of his unrealistic expectations.
