Buchanon to Serve Four Game Suspension

by Grant Paulsen

Recently re-signed Redskins cornerback Phillip Buchanon will miss the first four games of the 2011 season. Head coach Mike Shanahan broke the news in a Tuesday afternoon press conference.

“He was suspended for the first four games. I won’t get into details now,” the normally tight-lipped coach said. “That’s a little setback for us.. It came down a while back.”

Buchanon agreed to re-join the Redskins on Monday. The 30-year-old, 10th-year veteran was shopping the free agent market for the past week. He’s coming off of a season where he played in all 16 games, starting five, and recorded a career-best 18 pass-breakups..

“I’ve always been a big Phillip Buchanon fan. I like the way he handles himself, the way he works,” Shanahan added. “He’s what you look for in a fotball player.”

The reason for Buchanon’s suspension is still unknown.

“Obviously we’re going to miss him in the first four games, that’s always tough to lose a guy for that length of time,” Shanahan said. “But he’ll be here for the rest of the season.”
