The Washington Nationals rally to stun the St. Louis Cardinals 8-6 before a rousing 26,739 at Nationals Park. Laynce Nix’s bases loaded walk off of Cardinals reliever Jason Motte was the highlight of a six run seventh inning.
The Nationals turned a 6-2 deficit into an 8-6 victory, scoring six runs in an inning for only the fourth time this season.
“It was just a battle,” Nix said. “He is throwing hard. I tried to just stay relaxed and stay within my self and let him do the work.”
Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman’s return and his RBI double sparked the comeback. Danny Espinosa added three hits. Four players had at least two hits, including Jayson Werth.
“This team is gritty,” Werth said. “We got a bunch of guys in here that want to win and are hungry. We just need to keep it going. The bats are working. We are pitching good all year. Hopefully, the bats will show up the rest of the way.”
The one sour note was the announcement that first baseman Adam LaRoche will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery Thursday. Michael Morse has done very well at first base in LaRoche’s absence.
