Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo was disciplined and catcher Ivan Rodriguez was fined by Major League Baseball for their run-in last week with an umpire after a 1-0 loss to the Mets.

Rodriguez fine was for an undisclosed amount and the league office provided no details on Rizzo’s discipline.

Jayson Werth was called out by first-base umpire Phil Cuzzi in the ninth inning of last Thursday’s game at Citi Field. Replays appeared to show Werth was safe, which upset the Nationals. Rizzo and Rodriguez confronted Cuzzi in the stadium tunnel on their way to the locker room. Afterwards, the umpires filed a complaint with the league office.

Monday night on “The Mike Rizzo Show” on 106.7 The Fan, Bill Rohland asked Rizzo about the incident, and he confirmed the punishment but said, “I’m there to protect our players, I feel I protected our players at that particular time… Sometimes you have to take a bullet for the ballclub, I feel I did so at this time, and I feel it was for all the right reasons.”
