The Caps held their first full practice today after eliminating the New York Rangers on Saturday. The Caps still don’t know who they will play in the next round and could find out tonight if Buffalo beats Philadelphia it would be Buffalo. If Philadelphia wins tonight then it would depend on if Montreal beats Boston (Boston currently leads 3-2 with game 6 tonight in Montreal). If Buffalo and Montreal are eliminated then the Caps would play the winner of Pittsburgh and Tampa bay (series tied at 3-3 with game 7 tomorrow in Pittsburgh). The Caps have home ice advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs and only Vancouver had a better regular season record then them.
Alexander Semin didn’t practice today with what Bruce Boudreau said was a little bit of the flu. Boudreau said they told Semin not to come to the rink especially with them not playing till most likely Friday at the earliest. Dennis Wideman and Mike Knuble were on the ice thirty minutes before practice today. Wideman left about 15 minutes into the skate feeling light-headed but Boudreau said his leg is feeling good, Knuble practiced with the team for an hour and was on the ice for about an hour and a half today. Knuble said afterwards that he doesn’t know when he is coming back and is still day to day with what is believed to be a right hand injury.
The Caps called up Braden Holtby from Hershey (AHL) today. With the Hershey Bears being eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday, the Caps wanted Holtby here in case one of their goalies get’s hurt and they won’t have to have him fly in from western Canada. Also Boudreau said that they might recall others by the end of today. Tim Leone, Patriot-News columnist in Hershey and covers the Bears is reporting Perreault, McNeill, Pinizzotto and A. Gordon (when healthy) will join Holtby in Washington. Boudreau said today he won’t have them practice with the team because it would be too many players on the ice and they will practice separately and will be here in case someone get’s hurt.
The Caps practice lines today were: 21-19-8, 18-44-83, 25-90-16, 17-26-15-10-22, 55-52, 27-74, 4-23, 62-89-3 (rotating). Check out what Bruce Boudreau, Alex Ovechkin, Mike Knuble, Mike Green and Brooks Laich had to say following practice today.
