Chris Pontius nets two goals and Charlie Davies scores his league leading 5th goal of the 2011 MLS season in a 3-0 rout of FC Toronto at a frigid BMO Field.
United jumped on Toronto early leading 2-0 by the 10th minute of the match. Although Toronto had more shots, they only had one on goal while D.C. had six. Bill Hamid earned his first shutout of the year and United got its first three points on the road in 2011.
Chris Pontius got the scoring started early with his first goal of the year in the 5th minute. He made a great first touch on a ball getting past the defender leaving him alone with the goalkeeper to beat and Pontius tucked it in the bottom right corner of the goal leaving no chance for Toronto’s goalkeeper Frei.
In the 10th minute Charlie Davies buried a rebound off a Josh Wolff shot that was stopped by Frei. This gave Davies his 5th goal of the year on his first start of the season. Pontius completed the rout in the 73rd minute with a brilliant goal off a cut back move to lose his defender and than a nice right footed strike that curled past Frei.
With the victory United moved up in the Eastern Conference standings to 4th with 7 points. This sets up a battle for 2nd place in the East this Thursday at home vs. the New York Red Bulls on prime-time TV 8pm.
