Capitals Morning Skate Update

The Capitals (44-22-10, 98 points) play host to the Carolina Hurricanes (35-30-10, 80 points) tonight in a Southeast Dvision showdown from Verizon Center at 7pm.  The Caps are two points out from tops in the Eastern Conference and Head Coach Bruce Boudreau said one goal of theirs is to win the conference.  The Hurricanes are in a desperate position, with only seven games remaining they are five points out of a playoff birth and tonight can make or break their season.  The Capitals are 5-0-0 against the Hurricanes this season and have won 12 of their last 14 overall.

Alex Ovechkin, whose missed the last three games, and Jason Arnott, whose missed the last six, are most likely going to be back in the lineup tonight and will give the Caps, who come off a 4-2 six game road trip, a huge boost.  Semyon Varlamov (10-0-4, 2.26 GAA, .923 Save pct.) likely in net for the Caps and is 3-0-0, 1.95 GAA, .937 Save pct. against the Canes this season.

Mike Green skated for about 17 minutes before practice and got off the ice before the morning skate started.  Tom Poti didn’t skate at all today.  Jason Chimera, DJ King, Jay Beagle & Tyler Sloan look to be the scratches tonight.  Check out what Bruce Boudreau, Alex Ovechkin, Jason Arnott, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson & Brooks Laich had to say following the skate today.

That sarcasm meaning there were at least two other occassions where Sasha 2 came in the zone on a rush skated around numerous Carolina Hurricanes and took low percentage shots rather than looking to find the open man to pass off to.- There were a lot of groans in the third period when at 19 32 with the goalie pulled Semin took a slashing penalty and in the second period when Brashear took two minors one for Tripping and one for holding but I actually dont fault the players for that these were not great calls by the Refs in my opinion Brashs call for tripping was especially weak in that he was doing a one hand poke check from behind. Things I like in the current era – No Red Line – No Icing the Puck Against the Boards – – Slower Whistles When the Goalie Ices the Puck – Ovechkin Datsuyk and the other Russians who Skate Hustle Score AND Hit Check HARD.Things Im Really Really Not Wild About- The Mandatory Delay of Game Penalty – Calling Boarding Penalties When Someone Makes a Solid Good Hard Check – – – – Giving an extra two minutes to a player especially when he didnt start the fight – – The idea that high scoring game draws more fans – The Trap .Yes after the last two nights games against the Maple Leafs Id like to say Thank You Bruce Boudreau for changing the style of play the Caps use and trapping less. Opposing teams have definately been watching films and are clearly no longer even thinking about letting either Mike Green or Nicklas Backstrom skate around any freer than they let Ovechkin or Semin skate.
