The Caps, who are in the middle of a six game road trip, 2-1 so far, came home last night and will have a few days off before they head to Philly for a huge game Tuesday. Goalie Braden Holtby (9-2-2, 1.95 GAA, .930 Save pct.) was sent down to Hershey today and Semyon Varlamov is ready to go. Head Coach Bruce Boudreau said Varlamov will play next week. Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, Mike Green & Jason Arnott all took practice off.
Boudreau said he expects Mike Green to practice with the team on Monday, but it’s a day to day thing with Green right now as he recovers from being hit in the head. Green is eligible to come off long term injured reserve Tuesday for the Flyers game. Boudreau says he guesses Arnott is probably 7-10 days away, but it could be longer. Eric Fehr says there is a chance he’ll play Tuesday, he felt good today and had no limitations. Tom Poti is fully practicing, but Boudreau says it’s a process with him, not quick, but it’s coming along. Poti has missed 52 games this season with a pulled groin.
The Capitals are currently tied for first in the Eastern Conference with Philadelphia, but the Flyers have three games in hand. The Caps lead Tampa Bay for first in the Southeast Division by six points by the Lightning have two games in hand. If the Capitals win one more game or Carolina loses one more game, the Capitals clinch a playoff birth. Check out what Bruce Boudreau, Michal Neuvirth, Eric Fehr, Mike Knuble & Matt Hendricks had to say following practice today.
