Mathieu Perreault and the Washington Capitals came out firing in the first in a game they needed two points out of.  2:29 into it Perreault threw it at the net and it went five hole by Carey Price to give the Caps an early 1-0 advantage.  A little over 5 minutes later the Caps got a power play goal when Mike Green found Mike Knuble and they were rolling 2-0.  With all the momentum going into the 2nd the Caps again couldn’t carry it over.

Brian Gionta twice got good looks at Semyon Varlamov and beat him.  The first was a defensive lapse plus Marcus Johansson was out of position when he slapped one by Varlamov.  The second John Carlson had some momentum crossing the blue line and dropped it behind him to a forward wasn’t there and that’s when Tomas Plekanec took advantage stealing the puck and finding Gionta on a breakaway who beat Varly.  The Canadiens also out shot the Caps 26-15 through two periods and took the momentum back on their side.

In the third nobody could find anything and shots were pretty even, 10-9 in favor of the Canadiens.  The Caps came into the game losing 7 straight overtime/shootout games and 9 of their last 10.  After out shooting the Canadiens 5-2 in overtime and having a near John Carlson goal at the very end of the period not go their way they went to a shootout.  Nicklas Backstrom, Matt Hendricks and Alex Ovechkin all missed, while Brian Gionta had the lone shootout goal and won it for the Canadiens.  Semyon Varlamov had another solid outing stopping 36 shots.

The Caps have lost 8 straight overtime/shootout games and 10 of their last 11.  They are five points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Southeast Division and the Caps travel to Tampa for a must win game on Friday.  The Lightning are in the midst of a 12 game home stand and have won their first three.  The Caps are 27-15-10, 64 points on the season, but have points in 16 of their last 20 games.  Check out what Bruce Boudreau, Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green, Matt Hendricks & Mathieu Perreault had to say about the loss.
