Eric Fehr had two goals, Mike Knuble added another leading the Caps to a 3-1 victory over the Penguins in the 2011 Winter Classic. Click more for a game recap and to hear what Bruce Boudreau, Alex Ovechkin, Eric Fehr, Nicklas Backstrom, Marcus Johansson, Mike Green, John Carlson, David Steckel and Jason Chimera had to say following their big win…
Bruce Boudreau said after the game that it wasn’t just another game…and it wasn’t. This was the biggest game the Caps have played in since the 1998 Stanley Cup and they showed that they can play a defensive style game and still win. The Penguins got on the board first when Evgeni Malkin beat Semyon Varlamov on a breakaway to give the Pens the lead. But just a little over four minutes later the Caps got a power play and took advantage of it when Mike Green fanned on a shot going to the ice but kind of pushed the puck in front of Marc-Andre Fleury where Mike Knuble put it five hole and tied the game up. The Caps were rolling from there, especially the third line. Eric Fehr had the next two goals and Jason Chimera missed a wide open net, but the third line carried them and the Caps have a six game point streak after their eight game losing streak and are officially back on track.
In the third period it was pouring out, but the Caps never stopped and played a full 60 minutes. Semyon Varlamov stopped 32 of 33 shots and is now 7-4-1 on the season. The Caps are now 8-0-2 against the Penguins in their last 10 regular season games, 15-2-3 when scoring a power play goal, 17-0-1 when leading after two period and 22-0-2 when scoring at least 3 goals. The Caps go to 23-12-5, 51 points and will play Southeast Division rivals Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday at Verizon Center.
