It was a nice run and then it lasted way too long but the Wizards and Gilbert Arenas got their wish by dealing the three-time all star guard to Orlando in exchange for forward Rashard Lewis.
Kudos to Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld for being able to unload Arenas’ monumental salary — he has 63 million dollars owed him and that doesn’t include this season. Arenas had averaged 17 points a game but he was far from being his old lethal offensive self.
The rebuild can finally begin with Arenas gone as he was still a distraction as he tried to get back to form after being suspended for most of last season because of bringing guns into the Verizon Center locker room last year.
“This trade allows us to continue to rebuild around our core group of young players and provides financial flexibility as we move forward,” said Grunfeld. “We’re thrilled to have been able to accomplish those goals while also getting back a two-time All-Star in Rashard Lewis, who brings us versatility, three-point shooting and a veteran presence,” Grunfeld said.
