Mathieu Perreault, who was recalled this morning, wanted to show that he belongs here and he made a big statement tonight netting his first two goals of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the Caps let in 2 goals in the final 2:23 and then lost in a shootout. Alex Ovechkin added his 12th and 2nd in as many games while Tom Poti had two assists. Click more to listen to Bruce Boudreau, Alex Ovechkin, Tom Poti, Matt Hendricks & Mathieu Perreault postgame…
Mathieu Perreault didn’t waste any time making an impact centering the second line and beating Jonas Gustavsson deflecting a Tom Poti shot from the point only 2:55 into the game and giving the Caps a quick 1-0 lead. The Leafs came back later in the period as Clarke MacArthur beat Michal Neuvirth high glove side, but three minutes later the Caps beat Gustavsson on the power play when Mike Knuble got a rebound off a Leafs player and put it in to make it 2-1 Caps after one. Bruce Boudreau said after last game they weren’t getting “dirty” but tonight both goals were right in front of the net.
In the second the Caps took it to the Leafs as Mathieu Perreault scored his second of the game and his second of the season on a great curl and wrister then Ovi, who broke out of his slump last game, kept it going trying to put the game out of reach beating Gustavsson, but then the Caps, who were very complacent going into the third, just collapsed. They went back to how they played Saturday night and gave up three goals including two goals in the final 2:23 as the Leafs forced overtime.
In overtime the Caps had a few chances but no cigar and in the shootout the Leafs Grabovski had the lone goal and the Caps choked away two points only getting one. This is one of the worst losses of the season for the Caps and following the game Head Coach Bruce Boudreau praised Mathieu Perreault saying that if the rest of the forwards played with his energy they probably wouldn’t of lost the game. Another big loss for the Caps was losing Jeff Schultz in the 2nd and him not returning. Schultz will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken thumb. Michal Neuvirth stopped 24 of 28 shots and can’t be blamed for the last two goals which one was deflected and the other was a great one timer. The Caps are now 18-8-3, 39 points on the season and host Florida on Thursday. With practices the next two days, Bruce Boudreau will probably be working them quite hard trying to snap this three game slide.
