Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin broke his nine game goalless streak, but it wasn’t enough as the Capitals fall to the Thrashers 3-1 and its only their 2nd regulation loss at Verizon Center this season.  Click more for a recap and to hear from Bruce Boudreau, Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom & Eric Fehr…

The Caps and the Thrashers played a very even scoreless first.  But in the second the Thrashers broke out first with goals by Rich Peverley, who deflected in a long Dustin Byfuglien shot from the point, and then a great goal by Alexander Burmistrov beating Varlamov from the side going high corner, barely had an angle but just enough to give the Thrashers a 2-0 lead.  Late in the second period Bruce Boudreau switched up the lines and put Alex Semin with Nicklas Backstrom and Ovechkin and that opened things up.  The Caps then went 1:57 staying in the offensive zone, it looked like the Caps were on a power play, and finally Semin found Ovechkin who beat Ondrej Pavelec to break his streak and get the Caps right back in the game making it 2-1 heading to the third.

But 2:19 into the third the Caps went on the penalty kill after a questionable kneeing call on David Steckel and the Thrashers took advantage of it eight seconds later when Andrew Ladd squeezed one by Varlamov and took all the momentum away from the Caps and that was all she wrote.  Bruce Boudreau postgame said the team was still talking about the penalty and not focused on the game and it cost them.

Semyon Varlamov was solid stopping 30 of 33 shots, but the Thrashers Ondrej Pavelec was better stopping 45 of 46 shots.  The Caps were 0-5 on the power play with 17 shots and Boudreau said postgame he thought the Caps weren’t getting very many second opportunities and the goal scores weren’t getting dirty enough.  The Caps now are tied for the lead in the NHL with 38 points and fall to 12-2-1 at home this season.  This was Varlamov’s first loss since coming back from his latest injury and winning four in a row.  The Caps host the Maple Leafs on Monday and hope to get back to their winning ways…
