The Capitals were 0-2 against Boston this season and didn’t want to lose again and they didn’t defeating the Bruins 5-3 in front of a sold out Verizon Center. It wasn’t easy though giving up a three goal lead and pulling Michal Neuvirth. The Caps came out firing, out shooting the Bruins 8-3 after the first but still couldn’t put one by Bruins goalie Tim Thomas who came in the game 7-0-0 with a .72 GAA and hasn’t allowed more than 2 goals in a game all season. Well that changed in a hurry as the Caps beat him three times in the second including a shorthanded goal by Semin to round it out. Tyler Sloan got the scoring going on a long slapper and then Mike Green beat Tim Thomas later on in the period. But Alexander Semin continues his great season and this time on the penalty kill by stealing the puck and starting the breakaway and playing give and go with Mike Green to beat Tim Thomas and knocking him out of the game.
To start the third the Caps had a power play for the second straight game and the Bruins put in Tuuka Rask who came in 0-2-0 with a 3.54 GAA, well for the second straight game the Caps couldn’t put it away and the momentum started to shift to the Bruins. Jason Chimera got an early hooking call and the Bruins pounced as Michael Ryder beat Neuvy to make it 3-1…but then John Erskine takes an interference penalty right after that and the Bruins beat Neuvirth again on a long slapper by Nathan Horton to make it 3-2. The goals came 55 seconds apart and it was now a game. Later in the period Shawn Thornton got a semi breakaway and beat Neuvirth to tie it up. Bruce Boudreau say Neuvirth didn’t look good on the last two goals and he pulled him for rookie Braden Holtby who was also making his NHL debut in a 3-3 game against the Bruins with a little over 10 minutes remaining. Well only a few minutes later John Carlson came through with the game winner off a Boyd Gordon face off win and Carlson had a long slapper right above the circle to beat Rask. Alex Ovechkin had a late empty netter to seal it. In 10:09 of work Braden Holtby stopped four shots and got the hard hat. Michal Neuvirth ended up stopping 11 of 14 shots.
The Caps put 39 shots on the Bruins goalies, 25 on Thomas and 13 on Rask and then the empty netter. But this was a big win for the Caps, even though they blew a three goal third period lead, they came back and won it against one of the best teams in the NHL. The Caps now go to 9-4-0, 18 points and are at the top of the Eastern Conference and Mike Green has a four game scoring streak. The Caps host long time rival and Stanley Cup runner up, the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday for a 5pm face off from Verizon Center.
